Del Mar CA Survey Provides Insights 

While it’s very useful to hear how people who visit and work in Del Mar CA feel about community issues, it’s even more important to consider the specific perspective of the people who live here.  A recent article from the Del Mar Community Alliance’s Sandpiper newspaper reported results from an informal survey it conducted on various issues related to downtown redevelopment.  It is illuminating, to say the least! Among the information: originally it seemed only 45% of respondents felt the current Design Review Board process for downtown business development should continue.

However, when readers asked the newspaper to separate resident voters’ opinions, it turned out that 53% of residents were in favor of keeping the design review board’s process in place, while only 28% of non-residents felt similarly.

Other issues showed a clear distinction between Del Mar residents’ and non-residents’ opinions – whether the redevelopment of downtown Del Mar Village should focus on bringing storefronts closer to the sidewalk, whether sidewalks should be narrowed,  whether the limited resources should be invested in landscaping, etc.

The survey, while not scientifically controlled, did have interesting results and provided lots of food for thought and discussion regarding how to proceed with Del Mar’s revitalization.  It also made it clear how important it is to design and conduct a study properly – to define whom you are surveying and understand their biases based on where they reside…
