I was actually opposed to the idea of getting a dog, since I knew I would end up being the primary care taker – not my kids who were the ones begging to get one! Then we walked by an Open Arms Rescue setup outside of a pet supply store and met Dougie (named “Spunky” at the time). It was his sweet, calm disposition that sold us on him. He didn’t yap and whine, nor smother us with wiggling excitement and licks. He was calm and serene, and looked like a truly gentle spirit. We took him home for an extended visit (about a week) to see if he would get along with our cat and fit into our family. He turned out to be absolutely perfect – friendly to every other dog on walks, sweet to the kids and the cat, and never barks when left alone. We couldn’t be happier with our new member of the family!
This weekend, August 1-2, Coldwell Banker offices in communities across the United States, along with shelters and rescue groups in the Adopt-a-Pet.com network, will join forces for one of the largest adoption events of the year. This nationwide event builds on the success of the “Homes for Dogs Project,” a national campaign hosted by Coldwell Banker® and Adopt-a-Pet.com, that aims to find homes for 20,000 adoptable dogs in 2015. The 4th of July is a great time to celebrate our country. For most Americans, it means enjoying a BBQ meal and watching fireworks. North San Diego County has no shortage of options to enjoy fireworks this year. Check Discover San Diego’s website to see a list of firework locations throughout San Diego County.
In addition to fireworks, North San Diego County has some fun local 4th of July events. The City of Del Mar hosts an annual 4th of July Parade in the beautiful Powerhouse Park. Show up dressed in your favorite patriotic custom with your decorated bikes, scooters, wagons, baby strollers and leashed pets to participate in this annual tradition The San Diego Botanical Gardens also has an annual 4th of July Parade through the garden that is wonderful for young children. Families can parade decorated strollers and wagons (no bikes) and wear red, white and blue! Legoland’s Red, White and BOOM! has patriotic activities from morning to night including custom building contests, dance parties, costume contests and, of course, fireworks! The San Diego County Fair also has special Independence Day events, in addition to their amazing fireworks, including a Stars, Stripes and Stems Floral Design Contest, Patriotic Costume Contest, Hometown Heroes Parade and the Navy Band Southwest performing at the Grandstand Stage.
Though we may enjoy the excitement of the day, it is important to keep pets safe and stress free. The ASPCA has this great list of tips on what to do to keep your pet safe:
- Never leave alcoholic drinks unattended where pets can reach them. Alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets. If ingested, the animal could become very intoxicated and weak, severely depressed or could go into a coma. Death from respiratory failure is also a possibility in severe cases.
- Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.
- Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets’ reach. Certain types of matches contain chlorates, which could potentially damage blood cells and result in difficulty breathing—or even kidney disease in severe cases. Lighter fluid can be irritating to skin, and if ingested can produce gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If lighter fluid is inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop.
- Keep your pets on their normal diet. Any change, even for one meal, can give your pets severe indigestion and diarrhea. This is particularly true for older animals who have more delicate digestive systems and nutritional requirements. And keep in mind that foods such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes & raisins, salt and yeast dough can all be potentially toxic to companion animals.
- Do not put glow jewelry on your pets, or allow them to play with it. While the luminescent substance contained in these products is not highly toxic, excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation could still result from ingestions, and intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic containers.
- Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products out of reach. Ingestions can produce stomach irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression. If inhaled, the oils could cause aspiration pneumonia in pets.
- Never use fireworks around pets! While exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns and/or trauma to the face and paws of curious pets, even unused fireworks can pose a danger. Many types contain potentially toxic substances, including potassium nitrate, arsenic and other heavy metals.
- Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them to Independence Day festivities. Instead, keep your little guys safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home.

We are so lucky to have beautiful weather year round in San Diego that we sometimes do not appreciate the transition from winter to spring. Even though there is not a big change in weather it is still a great time of year to tackle a big house cleaning.
Looking around, idreamofclean definitely has the most comprehensive ultimate spring cleaning list we have ever seen. Best of all, many of the items have links on how best to tackle these chores. One of which is how to avoid soap scum build up on shower doors to begin – use Rain-X!
Though not many of us enjoy completing all these chores, most of us love the way our homes look when they are done. An additional benefit when you regularly stay on top of cleaning and maintenance is that when you are ready to sell your home there is much less work to be done to get your condo or house ready for sale.
Of course you should remodel your home to maximize your own enjoyment. However, if you are planning on selling in the future, it is always a good idea to think about resale value when considering renovations. If you are thinking of tackling remodeling projects to sell in the near future, you should research which home renovations make sense and how to accomplish them to add value to your home.
Remodeling.com has some great statistics for the Pacific Region that show the average costs and returns for various projects. Projects that add usable living space top the list in the Pacific, including deck additions which we are lucky enough to be able to use year round in San Diego. Happy Earth Day! We have all seen the signs around town about “When in Drought” and know that we have water use restrictions in place. What better way to celebrate Earth Day in San Diego County than to take time to consider how to reduce our water usage.
Inside our homes we can switch to low flow toilets and showerheads, as well as high efficiency washing machines. We can regularly check toilets and faucets to make sure they are not leaking. Of course, reducing the amount of time we shower and turning off the faucet while brushing our teeth can also contribute greatly.
As a homeowner, there is another way to reduce water usage — to switch to watersmart landscaping. The San Diego County Water Authority and its member agencies are partnering with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to offer FREE training classes this month and next on WaterSmart landscaping.
